Wildlife Encounters on the Road: Amazing Sights from Your Camper Window

Updated: Sep 4

Setting off on an adventure through the stunning landscapes of Iceland fills you with excitement. The open road invites not just breathtaking views but also the chance to meet some of the incredible wildlife that makes this island unique. From the comfort of your camper window, it is indeed possible to see some wildlife!

Iceland is a land of contrast, where summer bursts with vibrant life and winter wraps the views in serene quiet. Each season offers distinctive chances for wildlife encounters, making it a dream destination for travelers, campers, and photographers alike. In this post, we will share some amazing sights we experienced while camping in Iceland, and what you might spot from your own camper window.

The Thrill of Whale Watching

One of the biggest thrills is spotting whales off the coast. While driving along the arctic coast way in the North of Iceland, we have been able to see whales a few times right from the shore! The absolute best experience we´ve had though, was watching orcas right from a hot pot in Eyjafjörður! The fjord of Eyjafjörður is generally one of the best whale watching locations around Iceland!

These gentle giants are commonly seen from June to September, grazing in the rich feeding grounds around Iceland. Such moments create lasting memories. Be sure to have your camera ready, as these sightings are often quick!

Birds of a Feather

Of course Iceland is well known for it´s rich bird life especially during the breeding season from about May to August. From the charming puffins to graceful eagles, there is a lot to see all around Iceland!

Puffin

Puffins, with their bright beaks and playful nature, are a highlight in summer. We´ve often spotted them nesting on rocky cliffs near the ocean in places like the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands), where about 1 million puffins gather annually to breed. Also a beautiful place is Borgarfjörður Eystri, though it is a bit off the beaten tracks.

The Enigmatic Arctic Fox

The Arctic Fox is probably my personal favorite wild animal. Can you believe, it took me 8 years to finally get a good picture of them!

When you spot them, it´s absolutely magical!

These elusive animals are perfectly adapted to the extreme Icelandic winters. Their ability to blend into the snowy environments is awe-inspiring.

Reindeer and Other Grazers

In the far east of Iceland you can get lucky and spot some reindeer! Even though they are not native to Iceland, they are now a wild animal living in the beautiful Eastfjords.

Their presence enhances the magical atmosphere of the region. Viewing them from our camper window felt like stepping into a postcard. We are truly grateful for the chance to witness such breathtaking scenes. Łukasz by the way is the master of spotting reindeer! He seems them almost every time he drives through the east!

The Call of the Sea

Driving along the coast, you can also stumbled upon seals basking on the rocky shores. These playful marine mammals are often seen soaking up the sun, and their curious nature makes them a delight to observe.

We found a perfect spot to pull over and watch the seals from a safe distance in Snæfellsnes Peninsula on a beach called Ytri Tunga. Their playful splashes and barking created a lively backdrop that was hard to resist. In one moment, I counted at least fifteen seals lounging on the rocks, a scene that added vibrancy to the coastal landscape.

The Magic of Icelandic Nature

Traveling through Iceland's striking nature is a unique experience. The blend of diverse wildlife and breathtaking landscapes creates a sense of wonder that is unforgettable. Whether you camp in Iceland during summer or winter, there are always opportunities to connect with wildlife that leave you in awe.

Reflecting on our journeys, I realized that these moments of connection with nature are what make road trips truly special. Each sighting adds to the tapestry of memories that I will cherish forever.

Nature’s Wonders Await

Encounters with wildlife on the road enhance the joys of traveling through Iceland. From majestic whales to elusive arctic foxes, the island teems with life waiting to be discovered.

As you plan your own Icelandic adventure, keep your eyes open and your camera ready. Amazing sights await from your camper window. Embrace the journey and let the wonders of wildlife in Iceland inspire you. Safe travels!
