Exploring the Hidden Gems of Iceland's Golden Circle: Our Enthusiastic Off the Beaten Path Itinerary

Updated: May 4

When planning a trip to Iceland’s Golden Circle, many travelers imagine popular sights like roaring geysirs, cascading waterfalls, and the stunning scenery at Thingvellir National Park. But here’s a secret: a treasure trove of lesser-known spots offers just as much wonder. Join us as we share an itinerary that takes you through captivating off-the-beaten-path locations on the Golden Circle, featuring Faxi and Brúarfoss waterfalls, delightful ice cream from Efstidalur, the calming Secret Lagoon, and mouth-watering chocolates from Mika.

Starting with Faxi Waterfall

Our adventure began at Faxi Waterfall, a hidden treasure often missed by the typical tourist. Just a short drive from the bustling Geysir area, Faxi is a picturesque waterfall that tumbles elegantly into a serene pond.

The moment we arrived, we were greeted by an incredibly peaceful atmosphere; the sound of flowing water felt like a soothing melody. This well-kept area offers ample space for picnicking and photographing the stunning scenery, which we truly enjoyed. Many visitors overlook Faxi, allowing for a quiet connection with Iceland’s pristine beauty.

Faxi is about 7 meters high and 80 meters wide, making it a sight to remember. With fewer crowds, we felt a deep sense of appreciation for the island's raw and untouched allure.

Hidden Gem: Brúarfoss Waterfall

Next up on our journey was Brúarfoss, another hidden gem perhaps one of the most stunning waterfalls we’ve ever seen. Famous for its strikingly blue waters, getting to Brúarfoss requires a short but beautiful hike that winds through lush landscapes.

The trail is easy to follow and suitable for most hikers. When we finally arrived at the waterfall, we were completely awestruck. The vibrant blue colors popped against the dark rocks, and I couldn’t help but snap several photos to capture the breathtaking view.

Did you know that the water's deep blue hue comes from the glacial runoff that filters through the volcanic landscape? This unique feature enhances the beauty of Brúarfoss and adds to its reputation among nature lovers.

Sweet Stop: Ice Cream at Efstidalur

After our hike, we craved a refreshing treat. Near Brúarfoss there is Efstidalur, a delightful family-run farm that offers incredible homemade ice cream.

The farm boasts a variety of flavors, all made from fresh milk sourced on-site. We decided to indulge in their classic vanilla. It was creamy, rich, and truly a delight after a day of exploration. The charming setting, complete with panoramic views of the rolling hills, made our ice cream even more enjoyable.

While chatting with the friendly staff, they mentioned that their secret ingredient for rich flavor comes from their happy cows grazing nearby, which shows that farm-fresh ingredients truly make a difference!

Dimensional Relaxation: Secret Lagoon

Feeling refreshed from our ice cream, we turned our attention to relaxation at the Secret Lagoon. Unlike the more touristy Blue Lagoon, the Secret Lagoon offers an authentic experience in the quaint village of Flúdir.

Here, natural hot springs invite you to enjoy the geothermal waters surrounded by stunning landscapes. The laid-back vibe and serene atmosphere made it easy to unwind. We soaked in the warm water and savored a refreshing drink, completely in our comfort zone.

Statistics show that the Secret Lagoon attracts far fewer visitors than the Blue Lagoon, allowing for a more peaceful experience. The warm, bubbling waters and lush surroundings made us feel rejuvenated, encapsulating the magic of Icelandic nature.

Chocolate Delight: Mika

As our adventure neared its end, we couldn't resist treating ourselves to some exquisite chocolates from Mika, a local chocolatier renowned for their artisanal creations.

Mika specializes in chocolates made with Icelandic ingredients, providing a unique taste of the country in each bite. The cozy shop welcomes you with the delightful aroma of chocolate. I particularly enjoyed their sea-salt caramel chocolate; the perfect blend of sweet and salty left me craving more.

The knowledgeable staff took the time to share their chocolate-making process and the inspirations behind their creative flavors. Supporting a local business like Mika while enjoying such delicious treats made our experience even more special.
