When planning a camping trip, especially in awe-inspiring Iceland, your packing choices can greatly impact your experience. The dramatic landscapes and unpredictable weather present unique challenges. The right gear ensures that your adventure is not only enjoyable but also safe. Below, we've compiled our ultimate packing list to help you prepare for an unforgettable journey.

Understand the Icelandic Weather
Iceland’s weather is notoriously fickle. You might find yourself in sunshine one minute and heavy rain the next. That’s why layering is essential. Wearing layers allows for easy adjustments as temperatures shift throughout the day. For instance, instead of a heavy jacket, consider wearing a light base layer coupled with a fleece, topped off with a waterproof shell for when the rain hits.
Key Weather Statistics:
Average summer temperatures range from 8°C to 13°C (45°F to 55°F).
During winter, temperatures can drop to -5°C (23°F) or lower, especially in remote areas.
The wind chill makes everything feel even colder than that!
Clothing Essentials
Base Layers
Starting with base layers, we highly recommend thermal tops and bottoms made from Merino wool. These not only keep you warm but are also breathable and moisture-wicking. For instance, wearing a Merino wool base layer will keep you comfortable during physical activities like hiking.
Insulating Layers
Next, bring along insulating layers like a fleece jacket or a down-filled puffer coat. We typically pack a lightweight fleece that can provide warmth without being bulky, making it easy to carry. On particularly chilly evenings, we find that having an insulated jacket offers comfort and warmth.
Waterproof Outer Layer
A waterproof, breathable jacket is non-negotiable. One with good ventilation can prevent overheating during hikes. For example, purchasing a jacket that is rated for at least 10,000 mm waterproofing is wise, as it can withstand heavy rain. This quality will be invaluable when facing Iceland's sudden showers. At the same time, against what most hikers will tell you, we personally also often wear wool sweaters and if needed a completely waterproof rain jacket on top, one that is not breathable. This is maybe not ideal for hiking, but when simply outside without heavy activities, this is a very cheap and effective option!
Durable Hiking Pants
Choose hiking pants that are durable, comfortable, and preferably water-resistant. Also here, a wool base layer underneath helps a lot!
Swim suit
Don´t forget about our endless pools, they are the perfect place to warm you up after a long day, to relax a bit after a hike or to simply enjoy the beautiful Icelandic nature!
Accessories
Don’t overlook these crucial accessories:
Hiking Socks: A quality pair of wool hiking socks can keep your feet warm and reduce blisters.
Gloves and Beanie: These help combat the cold winds, which can be fierce at higher elevations. Bring them even in summer!
Sunglasses: Protecting your eyes from the strong Nordic sun is essential, especially when reflecting off ice and water.
Camping Gear
Tent
A sturdy tent suitable for windy conditions is essential. Our tents from Wildcamp, iKampers and Thule are super high quality. We´ve tested them in a lot of conditions and even though you should still avoid camping during a storm warning, they do very well in most of the crazy Icelandic weather days!

Sleeping Bag
Choose a sleeping bag rated for at least 5°C (41°F) to ensure you stay warm during chilly nights. The sleeping bags we provide you with are rated for 0°C, we also always make sure to give you extras, in case you end up getting very cold.

Sleeping Pad
Pair your sleeping bag with a comfortable sleeping pad that provides both insulation and cushioning. Our cars are equipped not only with a sleeping pad, but an actual mattress. This keeps you even warmer and is of course more comfortable, giving you a bit of a glamping experience ;)
Cooking Gear
Portable Stove
A compact portable stove is essential for whipping up quick meals. Make sure to carry enough fuel for the duration of your trip—typically, one fuel canister can provide 2-3 hours of cooking time. Even though we provide you with plenty of canisters, it´s good to know that you can buy them at any gas station or super market.

Cooking Utensils
A few lightweight utensils—a pot, a spatula, and a multi-tool—can make cooking much simpler. We like to bring along a small cutting board for prepping food and a reusable container for leftovers, ensuring nothing goes to waste.
Food & Storage
For sustenance, high-energy options like trail mix, energy bars, and dehydrated meals are ideal. These easy-to-carry foods help keep your energy levels up during long treks. We provide you with a small fridge, so you can also cook some actual meals on your trip ;)

Miscellaneous Items
Personal Care Items
Pack essentials such as biodegradable soap, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and sunscreen to protect against even the hazy Icelandic sun. Don't forget a travel first aid kit—it's vital for handling minor scrapes.
Navigation Tools
As you traverse Iceland’s stunning landscapes, having the right navigation tools is vital. We always keep a physical map along with our phones preloaded with offline maps for safety. A GPS device can also be a helpful backup. Keep in mind that Google maps does not always work in Iceland, especially in the Highlands. Knowing which roads are drivable and open before hand is crucial. Most gas stations and information centers are able to assist you with that and of course also our customer service team is always there for you if you need information!

Lighting
Finally, bring a reliable headlamp or flashlight. During summer months, the sun sets late, but good lighting ensures your safety as darkness falls. Look for one that offers multiple brightness settings to suit different needs.
